Description

This is for sale!!! >>The Melancholic Maniac<<

Oil paint on stretched duck-cotton canvas.
approx. 18x18" and 4" in depth. 2006

This is the first of the three pieces that make up my 'Dream Sequence'.
Here are the others: Memory and Transformation

'Memory' is about the type/stage of dreaming that tends to recap on daily activities by drawing from everyday experiences and routines to form said dreams..
The sides are purposefully left raw in order to show some
of the technique and emotion that went into these paintings.
I also find it freeing to the composition not to limit it into the boundaries of the two dimensional.

You can read more about the stages of sleep here: [link]

Excellent use of color to create dramatic contrast and emotion and feeling. Here is what I get from this piece. The textures you have created separate the canvas into separate impressions or dream states. It's as if it is constantly changing form. At the top, it is almost as if you are gazing upward due to the cloud like mix of color on the top left with a very daunting form, dominating the piece, appearing as if it was an eye peering down. On the right, the red and brown tones give a dark or nightmarish feeling. The angles created give a low perspective, feeling like the viewer is small in size. The heavy spatters give an impression of blood or chaos. The blood then becomes just another part of the whole as it forms what looks like a flower in the sky. On the bottom the green and blue colors reflect calm cool and relaxed emotion as if sitting in a field of grass. The "nebula" like area center left looks as if it is totally out of place illustrating the way dreams can change. As with all art it is subjective. Another person may get something totally different than what I interpreted but the process is fun. Excellent work.
